Driving License Exchange

Obtaining driving license in Slovakia

Foreigners can exchange their national driving license for an EU license in Slovakia. Before they do so they must have 6 months of residency in Slovakia. The process is called exchange – their license will be replaced by the EU (Slovak)license and their national license will not be returned.

EU citizens can use their national driving license. If they wish to exchange it (e.g. due to upcoming expiry) the process is relatively straight forward (consider around 1 week)
NON-EU citizens are required to change their national license after 6 months of residency in Slovakia. Documents from home country (country which issued the license) will be needed. Sourcing of these documents may be time consuming so it is advisable that foreigners organize these documents before leaving home country. It is also recommended, after license is exchanged to obtain international driving license.

Obtaining driving license in Poland

Foreigners can exchange their national driving license for an EU license in Poland. Before they do so they must have 6 months of residency in Poland. The process is called an exchange – their license will be replaced by the EU (Polish) license and their national license will not be returned.

EU citizens as well as the countries who are the signatories of the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic can use their national driving licenses provided they were issued in a new, unified format – credit card format. If they wish to exchange it (e.g. due to upcoming expiry) the process is relatively straight forward and takes around 30 days.
NON-EU citizens from countries who are not the signatories of the Vienna Convention are required to change their national license after 6 months of residency in Poland. Documents from home country (country which issued the license) will be needed. Sourcing of these documents may be time-consuming so it is advisable that foreigners organize these documents before leaving their home country. It is also recommended, after license is exchanged to obtain an international driving license.
